Building a Champion’s Mindset with Coach Edgar Vazquez

In the latest Resonate podcast, I sit down with Edgar Vazquez, a high school football coach who has dedicated his career to cultivating not only skilled athletes but strong, resilient individuals.

Despite still recovering from strep throat (please forgive my scratchy voice and brain fog from antibiotics!) I had the pleasure to sit down with my good friend, man of God, and high school football coach, Edgar Vazquez. Our conversation dives into the heart of coaching—how mindset, resilience, and flow state contribute to success on and off the field. Edgar shares how his faith and personal values guide his coaching philosophy and help build team cultures that last.

Mindset: The Key to Athletic and Personal Growth

At the core of our discussion is the power of mindset. Edgar emphasizes that success, in sports and life, begins in the mind. It’s about developing a mindset that embraces challenges, learns from setbacks, and continually strives for improvement. For athletes, this mental toughness can mean the difference between an average performance and an extraordinary one.

In coaching, it’s the same. Whether it’s dealing with tough losses or guiding young athletes through their personal struggles, mindset is everything. Edgar shares how his coaching style revolves around helping athletes understand the importance of maintaining focus, determination, and a growth-oriented outlook.

The Flow State: Unlocking Peak Performance

We also explore the elusive flow state—that mental space where athletes lose themselves in the game, performing at their best without conscious effort. Edgar talks about the importance of creating environments where athletes can tap into this state, reminding us that flow isn’t about magic; it’s about preparation, practice, and presence.

Helping athletes stay in the moment, free from distractions or doubts, is key to unlocking their full potential. As coaches, parents, or leaders, understanding how to encourage this focus and flow is a game-changer, not just for performance, but for the joy that comes from truly being in the zone.

Resilience: Learning Through Adversity

Resilience, another cornerstone of Edgar’s coaching philosophy, is crucial for young athletes. He emphasizes that failure and setbacks are inevitable but learning how to recover from them is what builds true character. Whether it’s a tough loss on the field or a challenge in life, resilience is about getting up, adjusting, and moving forward.

In this episode, we explore how resilience isn’t built in comfort—it’s developed through struggle, challenges, and ultimately, growth. For young athletes, this means learning to embrace adversity as part of their journey and seeing setbacks as opportunities to strengthen both their mental and physical game.

Building a Strong Team Identity

One of the most inspiring parts of our conversation was Edgar’s approach to team identity. Success, he explains, comes from creating a team culture built on shared values and mutual respect. A team’s identity is not just about wins or statistics; it’s about the deeper connection and unity that drives them forward.

Edgar stresses the importance of instilling purpose in every athlete. When players understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves—a team, a family, a mission—they perform with greater heart and passion. In the end, it’s the team identity, not just individual skill, that creates long-term success.

Faith and Values: The Heart of Coaching

What really stands out in our conversation is Edgar’s deep commitment to his faith and values as a coach. For him, coaching is about more than just teaching the technical aspects of football; it’s about shaping the lives of young athletes. His coaching philosophy is guided by personal integrity, faith, and the desire to make a meaningful impact on those he mentors.

Edgar’s belief in capturing hearts over wins resonates deeply with the message of this newsletter. His approach to coaching reminds us that the role of a coach, leader, or mentor is not only to develop skills but to shape the person as a whole. By leading with values and staying true to a higher purpose, coaches can leave a lasting imprint on the lives of their athletes.

Process Over Routine: The Path to Long-Term Success

Another valuable insight from Edgar is the idea of focusing on process rather than routines. A process-driven approach offers flexibility and encourages growth, while routines, are necessary, but entirely different and are meant to instill consistency to the same thing over and over and can lead to stagnation if followed blindly without an appropriate and relevant process. For Edgar, coaching isn’t just about following a playbook—it’s about adapting, evolving, and continually striving for improvement.

By emphasizing the journey over immediate results, athletes can develop a mindset that prepares them for long-term success, both on the field and in life.
